DR. CAROL MURDOCK RECEIVES
OKU-CHARLES CRAIG TEACHING AWARD

This year’s recipient of the OKU-Charles Craig Teaching Award is Dr. Carol Murdock.  Dr. Murdock was nominated by Epsilon Chapter at Creighton University.  Dr. Murdock graduated from Creighton University in 1984. Following graduation she entered the private practice of general dentistry.  Three years ago she was offered a faculty appointment at her alma mater and made the transition from private practice to a full time career in academia.  Her primary responsibilities at Creighton are in pre-clinical education in the field of operative dentistry and clinical education in general dentistry.  Upon assuming the position as course director for the pre-clinical operative dentistry program she began implementing innovative teaching techniques in the teaching of pre-clinical operative dentistry, which include computer simulations that have never been previously employed at Creighton. She has incorporated state of the art technology in her lectures, pre-clinical demonstrations and student testing.  She also incorporates a clinic style of evaluation into the pre-clinical operative dentistry technique laboratory, which enables her students to receive a detailed assessment of their laboratory work, and then uses those same criteria in the clinic when evaluating student performance.  Since incorporating her techniques, Operative Dentistry has earned a 5th percentile rating in the National Board Examination, Part I. A 5th percentile rating being the highest.

In her brief academic career she has become a productive researcher at Creighton.  She is involved in a number of research projects and is an advocate for student participation in research activity.  She has mentored numerous student research projects and mentored students who have also presented abstracts at national meetings.

Dr. Murdock actively recruits students who have an interest in dental education and has utilized them in her sophomore laboratory.  She has personally taken the initiative to encourage these students to think of a career in dental education.

To quote a third year dental student at Creighton, “I sense how much she enjoys interacting with students and how many students appreciate her willingness to help and teach them.  I feel that Dr. Murdock’s eagerness to work with students has sparked my interest to consider a career in dental education.”

Omicron Kappa Upsilon congratulates Dr. Carol Murdock upon being this year's recipient of the "Charles Craig Teaching Award".
