DR. STUART C. WHITE RECEIVES
OKU-STEPHEN H. LEEPER AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE

This year’s recipient of the OKU-Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence is Dr. Stuart C. White. Dr. White was nominated by Epsilon Chapter at the UCLA School of Dentistry.

Dr. White received a dental degree from UCLA in 1968.  Dr. White’s interests in radiology lead him to pursue advanced training in oral and maxillofacial radiology and radiation biology/biophysics at the University of Rochester’s Eastman Dental Center.  He was awarded a PhD in 1973.

Dr. White returned to his alma mater, and over the next 2 decades has distinguished himself as a teacher, researcher, lecturer, author, consultant and Webmaster.

Dr. White is the author of “Oral Radiology: Principles and Interpretation”.  Currently in its fourth edition, it is a leading textbook on oral and maxillofacial radiology.  Translated into a number of foreign languages, Dr. White’s textbook serves as a cornerstone for dental radiology curricula at many institutions.

In addition to the printed text, Dr. White’s teaching of oral and maxillofacial radiology extends to the electronic media.  Dr. White is the author of 2 web-based teaching programs, which are used by students, residents and clinicians throughout the world.

One program is an interactive teaching tool, which Dr. White employs to teach his students normal radiographic anatomy.  It is located at: www.dent.ucla.edu/sod/depts/oral_rad/courses/DS451c.

His second program called ORAD, which is short for Oral Radiographic Differential Diagnosis, is intended to assist in diagnosing radiographic lesions of the jaw.  Over 130 different types of lesions are sorted according to inputs provided by the user.  Dr. White continuously updates  the program as new information on orofacial lesions becomes available.  It is located at www.dent.ucla.edu/sod/depts/oral_rad/orad.html and is shared freely for the purpose of advancing oral radiology.

Dr. White has been instrumental in formulating clinical guidelines for prescribing dental radiographs.  Initially sponsored by the US Food and Drug Administration, this effort was to teach the dental profession when and what types of radiographs should be obtained in order to diagnose patients while minimizing unnecessary patient exposure to x-radiation.

Oral and maxillofacial radiology has developed into a recognized discipline in its own right.  Dr. White, as a founding member of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial, having served as its president from 1983 to 1985 played a strong role in its development and finally in the recognition of oral and maxillofacial radiology as a dental specialty this past year.

Omicron Kappa Upsilon congratulates Dr. Stuart C. White upon being this year's recipient of the "Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence".
