The "OKU-Charles Craig Teaching Award" recognizes young dental educators who have demonstrated new and innovative teaching techniques in the art, science and literature of dentistry. The award was created to encourage and honor individuals who have implemented innovative teaching techniques into dental education.
This year recipient of the "OKU-Charles Craig Teaching Award" is Dr. Michael A Ignelzi Jr. Dr. Ignelzi is Assistant Professor of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
Dr. Ignelzi received his DDS and Pediatric Dentistry certificate from the University of North Carolina. He then continued his education receiving a PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics from UNC in 1992. He did a post doctoral fellowship at University of Southern California before joining the University of Michigan faculty.
He received strong letters of support for this award which all mention his passion for teaching, and his remarkable ability to mentor others. His innovative style of teaching, however, was emphasized in all letters. Dr. Ignelzi incorporates popular game show formats in his teaching. At the beginning of the semester, students are divided into teams and instructed to learn everything they can on a pre-assigned topic. During the last session of the semester, Dr. Ignelzi serves as game show host as students use their newly acquired knowledge to compete for milk and chocolate chip cookies.
