First Year Student Message

A Message from the President of the Supreme Chapter

 Dear First-Year Dental Student:

As President of the Supreme Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, dentistry’s honor society, it is an absolute pleasure to congratulate you upon your entrance to dental school.  You should be proud of yourself for choosing such a distinguished and rewarding profession.

Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), the national dental honor society, was founded in 1914 with admission and membership being limited to those dental students who have distinguished themselves by a high grade of scholarship, have demonstrated exemplary traits of character and who have shown potential qualities for future professional growth and attainments.  I invite you to visit our website at www.oku.org where you may learn more about OKU and the requirements for membership.

As this new chapter in your life commences, my word of advice is to take advantage of all the opportunities that your school has to offer.  This is a time to absorb as much knowledge as you can, make a new circle of friends who will become your colleagues upon graduation, and enjoy knowing that you have chosen a most fulfilling career path.  The field of dentistry is extremely rewarding but will require commitment, hard work, and sacrifice.  Please recognize that you are not alone, however, as there are many individuals who want to help you, including OKU faculty at your institution.  Please do not hesitate to ask for help.

On behalf of the members of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, I wish you continued success and a most enjoyable first year.

Sincerely,

Judith A. Buchanan, D.M.D., Ph.D.
President, Supreme Chapter
Secretary, Eta Chapter
