DR.
KAREN CREWS RECEIVES
OKU-STEPHEN H. LEEPER AWARD FOR
TEACHING EXCELLENCE
The "Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence" is awarded to an individual who has shown innovation in teaching, and significant contributions to both dental education at their institution and to the entire dental education community. This year Dr. Karen Crews was selected for this award.
Dr. Karen Crews is a Professor of Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, School of Dentistry.
She is a Mississippian through and through receiving all of her education in that state. She received her undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University and her DMD from the University of MS School of Dentistry.
Her awards and honors include Outstanding Young Women in Mississippi, Clinical Teacher of the Year, American College of Dentists- Faculty of the Year Award and the Gold Excellence in Research Award from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Dr. Crews was appointed early in her career as coordinator of the Community Health Project where she assisted students in the development and implementation of tobacco research and tobacco health education projects. This led to a vision to develop and implement a pre- and postgraduate curricula on the treatment of tobacco dependence in the healthcare setting. In 1999, Dr. Crews received a 3.5 million dollar grant to create Mississippi’s first large-scale state government funded initiative to reduce tobacco use statewide termed the ACT Center. She obtained additional funding from the state and currently serves as the Director and Principal Investigator of the Center.
