The "Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence" is awarded to an individual who has shown innovation in teaching, and significant contributions to both dental education at their institution and to the entire dental education community. This year Dr. Michael Glick was selected for this award. Dr. Michael Glick received his dental degree from the Hebrew University, School of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel and his graduate training in oral medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. Dr. Glick is Professor and chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, and Director of the Division of Oral Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. His present research focuses on provision of dental care for medically complex patients. He has published more than one hundred articles, book chapters and monographs on oral medicine related issues, specifically proposing protocols for dental treatment for patients with complex medical conditions. He has also written and co-edited several books including “Dental Management of Patients with HIV”, the American Dental Association’s Oral Health Care Guidelines and Burket’s Oral Medicine, 10th Edition. He is the recipient of over sixteen research grants, his most recent being “Bioterrorism/Public Health Emergency Curriculum Development Project (William E. Halperin)”, HRSA $1,678,242, PI. Dr. Glick is also the recipient of over twenty-three treatment and education grants that have ranged from “AIDS Training for Dental Personnel” to “Dental Care for Patients with HIV Disease.” Dr. Glick brings his expertise in the management and treatment of this population of patients, on a daily basis, not only to our postgraduate and residency programs, but also to the undergraduate dental program at New Jersey Dental School (NJDS). In addition to his myriad of administrative, teaching and research responsibilities, Dr. Glick undertook the challenging task of developing an interactive CD-ROM entitled “Medical Considerations for Dental Practice”. This CD-ROM is available from Quintessence Publishing Co., Inc., Carol Stream IL. Although developed and marketed to the private, general dental practitioner, this innovative teaching program has proved to be an invaluable resource to the students and clinical faculty at NJDS. Dr. Glick provides a complimentary copy to all incoming junior students as they begin their clinical studies at NJDS. With the introduction of an e-curriculum four years ago, this program compliments and enhances the current teaching strategy at NJDS. Dr. Glick has received accolades, nationally and internationally, by his peers as witnessed by the many awards and appointments detailed in his curriculum vitae. But the most recent testament to his acumen and depth of knowledge was expressed by the American Dental Association when he was asked to serve as editor-in-chief of their flagship publication, the Journal of the American Dental Association. He brings a vast and varied background to this most prestigious publication. Omicron Kappa Upsilon congratulates Dr. Michael Glick upon being this year's recipient of the "Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence".
