Dr. Thomas D. Marshall receives OKU-Stephen H. Leeper Award for teaching excellence
The "Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence" is awarded to an individual who has shown innovation in teaching, and significant contributions to both dental education at their institution and to the entire dental education community. This year Dr. Thomas D. Marshall was selected for this award.
Dr. Thomas D. Marshall, is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry.
Dr. Marshall received an undergraduate degree in chemistry, a master’s degree in education (counseling and guidance), and his DDS degree (with honors) all from Indiana University. After 15 years in private practice and two years of service with the Veteran’s Administration, Dr. Marshall entered dental education. He has been at the UTHSCSA School of Dentistry since 1980.
Dr. Marshall’s career at UTHSCSA exemplifies the criteria for which the Stephen H. Leeper Award was created. He has been an extremely innovative and well-liked faculty member. He has developed eight different instructional programs or materials that enhance teaching. His most recent contribution is a life-like simulated dental caries material for insertion into simulated carious lesions (in plastic teeth) that he has designed, tested, and implemented.
Dr. Marshall is a revered teacher who goes “above and beyond” the classroom to help his students learn. He has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching at UTHSCSA and has been chosen as “Assistant Marshall” by the graduating seniors on 12 occasions, including the past 9 consecutive years. He truly represents the ultimate professional role model, learned yet compassionate.
