Mu Chapter Welcomes New Members

The Mu Chapter at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry held its banquet on June 7, 2012 at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center in Coralville, Iowa. Alumni member inductees from the Class of 2012 included:

Mu Chapter Sponsored Activities

Freshman Orientation Luncheon to welcome the freshman students was held on August 14, 2012 during Orientation Week.  Chapter president Lewis Humbert welcomed the students and described our chapter and what it means to be inducted into OKU.

Two Pregame Socials which included the Student Mentor/Mentee Program held on September 17 and October 15, 2011.  For 1012 the chapter will be sponsoring three pregame socials.  All students are invited to attend and meet their mentor along with the Mu Chapter members.


The Sophomore White Coat Ceremony was held on May 9, 2012-this is the second year that Mu chapter has sponsored this activity.  Chapter president Lewis Humbert reminded the students that election to OKU is not only based upon high levels of scholarship but they must demonstrate exemplary traits of character and potential qualities of future professional growth and attainment

From its Distinguished Lecturer Series to the Annual Research Day at NYU College of Dentistry, from white coats to black ties, Omega Chapter is one of our busiest component chapters. Omega chapter is also this year's recipient of the Supreme Chapter's annual chapter of the year award.

OKU Scholarship Reception

On Wednesday evening October 5, 2011 Omega Omega Chapter recognized those students from the Classes of 2012, 2013 and 2014 for having achieved the "Dean's List" with a grade point average at or above 3.5 at our chapter's annual scholarship reception. (Click image to enlarge.)





Omega Omega Chapter Welcomes New Members

On May 5, 2012 the Omega Omega chapter held its annual awards dinner at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield, NJ.  New members were inducted and chapter president, Dr. Trevor Simmonds, presented awards.  Leonid Epshteyn ('13) was this year's recipient of a $10,000 scholarship from the "OKU-Omega Omega Scholarship Foundation" and the recipient of the "Dr. William S. Kramer Award of Excellence".  A "Certificate of Academic Excellence" was presented to Mr. Jason Nishikubo ('15), Mr. Alec Keon ('14/Tie) and Mr. Mena Morgan ('14/Tie) for having attained the highest grade point average in their respective class. Ms. Naina Kaushal was presented with the "Certificate of Excellence in Research" for her demonstration of outstanding research activity this past year in the dental or biomedical science fields as a pre-doctoral dental student. Each of the four recipents also received a cash award from the "OKU-Omega Omega Scholarship Foundation". Dr. James Delahanty was presented with "Life Membership". The following nine students from the Class of 2012 were inducted as alumni members: Kathleen Dunn, Christopher M. Fears, Neha G. Golwala, Kimberly M. Hollywood, Richard L. Lee, Richard L. Life Membership

Dr. James Delahanty was awarded Life Membership in OKU by the members of Omega Omega chapter.  Having been elected an alumni member of OKU upon graduation from dental school school in 1975, Dr. Delahanty served as president of Omega Omega chapter from 1995-1997 and president of the Supreme Chapter in 2001.  Dr. Delahanty is currently the secretary-treasurer of Omega Omega chapter and a member of the board of directors of the Supreme Chapter of OKU.

Dr. Delahanty was instrumental in the founding of the "OKU-Omega Omega Scholarship Foundation" and currently serves on its executive board.




LOGOWHITE_.gifThe "OKU-Omega Omega Scholarship Foundation" is a non-profit public foundation established in 1999 by Omega Omega Chapter to benefit the dental students at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. To be eligible for our $10,000 scholarship a student must have completed the second year of dental education at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of NJ and is selected based upon academic excellence, exemplary traits of character and the potential promise for future professional growth and attainment.   The "OKU-Omega Omega Scholarship Foundation" also provides scholarship awards to the recipients of our "Certificate of Academic Excellence" and "Certificate for Excellence in Research".

Sigma Tau Chapter (Stony Brook University)



The Sigma Tau chapter has been revitalizing itself over the last few years to increase its activities and recognition at the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University.  This year the Sigma Tau chapter inducted its new alumni and faculty members into OKU at the 5th Season Restaurant in Port Jefferson, NY on Thursday, May 3rd.  The attendance for the dinner was one of the largest that chapter has had in years and we hope to continue with this successful momentum.

The chapter recognized  two distinguished faculty members who were the recent recipients of the OKU "Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence".  A standing ovation was given to Dr. Allan Kucine (2010 recipient) and Dr. Fred Ferguson (2012 recipient).

The chapter inducted four graduating dental students to alumni membership: Drs. Keith Bracy, Brian Carkner, Ava Rosenbloom and Sara Sullivan.  In her introduction for each student, chapter president, Dr. Debra Cinotti provided the members an overview of each student's academic, clinical and professional accomplishments.  The chapter commends these four students on a job well done and wishes for continued success.

Faculty Membership


The Sigma Tau chapter inducted Sylvia Rice, DDS into faculty membership.  Dr. Rice is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry.  She is the course director for the Year 1 dental anatomy course and is the clinical director in the General Practice Residency Program at the School of Dental Medicine.  Additionally, she is an alumnus of the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University. The chapter membership enthusiastically welcomes her.



Honorary Membership

fergusonThe chapter was pleased to welcome Alexander Dagum, MD, FRCS(C), FACS, Clinical Professor of Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery; Co-Director Cleft Palate Craniofacial Center and Chief of Plastic Surgery, into honorary membership.

Dr. Dagum was introduced by Dr. Richard Faber, Director of the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics.  Dr. Dagum has been a friend of the School of Dental Medicine for many years.  He is the Co-Director of the Cleft Palate Team at Stony Brook and his team includes many members of the School of Dental Medicine faculty, including pediatric dentists, orthodontists and oral and maxillo-facial surgeons.  He also participates in our Dentofacial Deformities Conferences held at the Dental School.  He has been generous in mentoring many oral and maxillo-facial surgery residents in their training program.  He is extremely active in missions to China to treat cleft palate and burn victims and has taken some of the School of Dental Medicine faculty with him on these missions.  Dr. Dagum is also doing research in soft tissue properties at the Engineering School on campus.  As such, he was invited to be our keynote speaker at the induction dinner.  He discussed "Surgical Volunteering in China 2005-2015", which stimulated a great deal of interest from the audience.

As part of the dinner celebration of the new member inductees, Sigma Tau chapter also invited the recipient of the OKU "Dr. William S. Kramer Award of Excellence" and the Sigma Tau Chapter Award to attend to celebrate their accomplishments and present them with their award.  This year's recipient of the "Kramer Award" was Ms. Adina Rosenfeld from the Class of 2013.  Lastly, the Sigma Tau Chapter Award was presented to a second year dental student who had achieved the hightest academic average during his/her first year at the dental school.  This year's recipient was Mr. Dmytro Zhurakovskyy, Class of 2014.

Delta Delta Chapter (University of the Pacific)



On Saturday, June 9, 2012, the Delta Delta Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, of the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry held its Convocation at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.  Delta Delta welcomed 21 new members, hosting a total of 125 guests, including 12 past chapter presidents.  Delta Delta also installed its new officers for the 2012-2013 term.

Second Year Retreat - Delta Delta Chapter provided $600 in support of the Dugoni School’s annual 2nd Year DDS/IDS retreat. Held at the Presidio’s Golden Gate Club on October 26, 2011, events included an informative presentation by the California Dental Association Wellness Committee. Four dentists shared their difficulties with alcohol and drug addiction during a frank and interactive seminar. Additionally, students participated in various leadership activities.

OKU Excellence Day – OKU Excellence Day celebrates student excellence in clinical dentistry and research. Students are recognized for their achievements and provided a forum to display their work. This event began 14 years ago with a chronicle of research efforts and two years later expanded to include clinical achievements. Delta Delta Chapter provided $2000 funding each for clinical awards, research awards, and for a catered reception at the end of the day for a total of $6,000.  This year’s event on May 23, 2012 included 65 clinical presentations in 9 categories and 44 research presentations in 7 categories. Over 20 members of the faculty served as judges. The event was well attended with over 150 at the reception.
